Uncapped spinner Shoaib Bashir could earn his Test debut against India in the Second Test after Jack Leach was ruled out.
Leach suffered an aggravation to his left knee when fielding during England’s thrilling victory in the First Test at Hyderabad last week. The 32-year-old did not participate in England’s first training session this morning in Vizag, where the Second Test begins on Friday, and only bowled seldom during India’s fourth innings chase.
“He’s ruled out of the second Test, unfortunately the knock he took resulted in a haematoma,” captain Ben Stokes said. Last week, Stokes praised Leach as a “warrior” for persevering through the series opener.
Both for him and for us, it is a great shame. We’re monitoring it daily, but the medical staff is now in charge of it, so hopefully nothing too serious is keeping him away for too long.”
In Hyderabad, England included Joe Root and three spinners in their lineup. With Leach out, Somerset teammate Bashir is the only qualified candidate to replace him. Due to a visa issue pertaining to his Pakistani ancestry, the 20-year-old’s arrival in India at the beginning of the trip was delayed.
Although Bashir has only participated in six first-class games, rookie spinners under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have performed admirably. “[Bashir] has a lot going for him,” Crawley remarked. “He is aware of his intentions and backs.
