Stephen Fleming describes the atmosphere in the dressing room after MS Dhoni lost his captaincy, saying, “There wasn’t a dry eye.”

The iconic captain of the Chennai Super Kings, MS Dhoni, who captained the team to five IPL titles, unexpectedly decided to resign from his captaincy. This was a shocking development for both the team and the supporters. The 2024 season, which may be his final in the league, was quickly approaching when the news was released.

Just one day before the tournament’s first matchup against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the legendary wicketkeeper-batter gathered his colleagues to impart the news that left the entire dressing room overcome with emotion.

Most people were surprised by the revelation, despite rumours that Dhoni might give up the captaincy in upcoming seasons. The 42-year-old declared that he will concentrate only on his batting and wicket-keeping responsibilities, leaving youthful Ruturaj Gaikwad to assume the task of guiding CSK. Head coach Stephen Fleming described the moment as a torrent of emotions for many in the dressing room.

“A wide range of emotions were felt when Dhoni broke the news. Lots and lots of tears. In the changing room, not a single eye was dry. Everybody was moved. The last time CSK changed the captain, we weren’t as prepared for MS to go and for a change in leadership,” Fleming told NDTV Sports.

Fleming’s statement perfectly captures Dhoni’s intimate bond with his teammates. He had also given over the captaincy to Ravindra Jadeja for the 2022 campaign. But the team failed to succeed under the all-rounder, forcing Dhoni to take back leadership.
